An application by the Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport International Terminal, operated by TAV Izmir, an affiliate of TAV Airports Holding, for the “Airport Carbon Accreditation” program initiated by Airports Council International Europe (ACI EUROPE) within the scope of environmental awareness, has been accepted during ACI’s 19th Annual Congress, held in June.
TAV Airports Holding President & CEO, M. Sani Þener said, “TAV Airports Holding has carried out many projects centered around environmental awareness in our airports. With the admission of the project carried out in the Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport International Terminal to the “Airport Carbon Accreditation” program initiated by ACI Europe, all of our projects aimed at environmental awareness will be certified and recorded from now on. Following the Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, we aim to continue this participation with Istanbul Atatürk, Ankara Esenboða and the other airports we operate. At a time when global warming is threatening the earth we live in, we at TAV Airports aim to meet our responsibilities. By neutralizing the carbon emissions of our airports through step-be-step accreditation, we aim to contribute to the minimization of global carbon dioxide levels.”
ACI EUROPE’s Director General Olivier Jankovec said: “Up to the present there has been no system approved by corporations throughout Europe for the mapping and reduction of carbon emissions in airports. Ratified at present by 31 airports, the “Airport Carbon Accreditation” will provide a common European framework approved by corporations for the recognition and evaluation of efforts by airports.” Stating that the “Airport Carbon Accreditation Program,” initiated by ACI Europe with the aim of reducing carbon emissions, transforms sectoral promises into net activities, Jankovec said: “This is an indication that European airports are fulfilling their duties concerning the role of aviation on climate change.”
The Airport Carbon Accreditation program provides a common framework for reporting and reducing carbon emissions from airport operations. For the first time, it sets standards for the reporting of carbon emissions in a frame work that is specifically adapted to the unique complexity of the airport site. These standards are fully compatible with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) “Greenhouse Gas Protocol” Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standards.
“We grew even more passionate when we realized that we could prevent the emission of tons of CO2 within the scope of this program and that we were making a contribution not only to Izmir and to Turkey, but to the whole world and humanity. We are continuously developing our knowledge on this subject and we are happy with our responsibility to be spearheading this field.”

“In addition to the environmental projects we have been carrying out since we began to operate TAV Izmir, we have also received admission to the “Carbon Accreditation – Level 1” program. Being the first in this field provides us with great enthusiasm. We are going to do our very best to leave a cleaner world to future generations.”
