EDITOR’S RECOMMENDATION
All of the students of Beuys, who was among the founding members of the Green Party in Germany, are politically active.
The Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM) is hosting an exhibition of works by Joseph Beuys, one of the legendary leaders of contemporary art, and his students until 1 November 2009.
Curated by Friedhelm Hütte, Artistic Director of Deutsche Bank and art critic Ahu Antmen, the exhibition contains works done on paper by Joseph Beuys and 350 works by some of his leading students.
From 1961 to 1972, when he was dismissed from his school, Beuys, who had said, “My greatest work is my work as a teacher,” trained more than 300 students at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. One of his students, Martin Hentschel, now Director of the Krefeld Arts Museum, describes his charismatic teacher in the following way: “I was enrolled in Joseph Beuys’
class at the Akademie in 1970. Beuys had accepted all 150 students who had applied, thus irritating the management. I began drawing with the other students. According to the Beuysian understanding, drawings constitute the basis for all art work. We used every kind of paper, from newspaper to toilet paper. Beuys’ style of education was out-of-the-ordinary and inspiring. When a drawing was analyzed, talk would lead from the Steiner School’s political understanding to art and to nature. Beuys was the first artist to emphasize the importance of nature in his work. But in 1972 they fired him from the school. We were furious. We organized protests in Dusseldorf. Beuys did not care about being fired from the Akademie; he continued to teach, without being paid. When the management discovered this, he was prohibited from entering the school.”
