IMPORTANT CONNECTIONS AT THE INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORTATION FORUM
TAV Group CEO Sani Şener and Strategy Director Waleed Youssef found the opportunity to meet with ministers from target regions at the International Transport Forum (ITF) that was held in Leipzig, Germany.
The ministers of various countries came together and exchanged ideas within the framework of the ITF, chaired this year by Turkey. Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım asserted that Turkey has emerged from the status of a country occupied primarily with its own problems, becoming one which can bring together other countries.
Minister Yıldırım pointed out that the forum, which focused on the ways in which transport is being affected by the global financial crisis and the precautions that need to be taken, drew the attendance of ministers and deputy ministers from close to 50 countries; from the USA, China and Japan to Germany, the UK and India. He also remarked that approximately 600 sector representatives, business people and company managers participated in the meetings.
Yıldırım stated that among the subjects most emphasized included the support that needs to be provided to the transport sector during the crisis, the removal of obstacles to transportation and the undertaking of common efforts to produce and develop environmentally sensitive, innovative projects that will decrease carbon dioxide emissions, such as those which employ the use of environmentally friendly vehicles.
“We hope that a common understanding will emerge on these subjects,” he said, adding that everyone shared their experiences during the crisis.
TAV Airports Holding CEO M. Sani Şener, who participated in a panel discussion held within the framework of ITF, expressed his views on public and private sector partnerships.
Şener pointed out that Turkey stands out as a country that has produced very effective and successful examples of public-private sector partnerships. Remarking that, due to the chairmanship of Turkey and Minister Yıldırım this year, the Turkish committee had a strong presence. Şener continued, “This forum was very important from the point of view of the promotion of Turkey and the development of transportation in Turkey. It was thrilling to broadcast the success of a regional organization that has emerged in Turkey and to be cited as an international example.”
TAV Airports Strategy Director Waleed Youssef also closely followed panel discussions and sessions with Şener, meeting with ministers and officials from countries in TAV’s target regions.

TAV Airports Holding Executive President M. Sani Şener was appointed member of the Airports Council International Europe(ACI Europe) Board of Management during the annual meeting that took place in Manchester, England.
Regarding his participation in ACI Europe, Şener said, “Becoming part of Airports Council International Europe and being able to make a positive contribution to the interests of our sector both in Europe and worldwide is a source of great honor for me. ESENBOĞA ELECTED BEST AIRPORT
The Ankara Esenboğa Airport, operated by TAV Airports Holding, was elected “Best Airport” by the Airports Council International Europe (ACI EUROPE).
In a competition carried out by Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe), in four categories the Ankara Esenboğa Airport, operated by TAV Airlines Holding, was elected “Best Airport” in the “5-10 million passengers” category.
In the competition, Esenboğa, which is the only terminal in Turkey used for both Domestic and International Flights, was assessed according to criteria such as environmental sensitivity, quality, security, commercial areas and operational continuity and skills
In the ceremony held in the UK, TAV Airports Holding CEO M. Sani Şener received the award with State Airport Authority (DHMI) General Manager Orhan Birdal. Birdal expressed his joy at the success achieved by Esenboğa, A prime example of public-private sector partnership.
CEO Şener explained, “We opened Esenboğa Airport three years ago in Ankara, capital of a country which is a candidate for membership in the European Union. The fact that it was chosen “Best Airport” in Europe makes us especially proud because it demonstrates the level achieved by Turkish civil aviation in airport operations. We would like to especially thank the Ministry of Transport, the State Airport Authority (DHMI) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation; all of whom see airport operations as a totality of values and services and have provided us with support.”
In the competition, organized by ACI EUROPE in four categories, the Bologna Airport in Italy was elected “Best Airport” in the category of up to 5 million passengers, Palma de Mallorca Airport in Spain in the 10-25 million passengers category, and the Amsterdam Airport in the Netherlands in the over 25 million passenger category.
THE “SECOND BEST AIRPORT” OF SOUTHERN EUROPE
The Istanbul Atatürk Airport--operated since 2000 by TAV Istanbul Terminal Operations, a partnership affiliated with TAV Airports Holding--was elected “Second Best Airport” of Southern Europe at the “Best Airports in the World Awards, 2009” organized by the UK-based research group Skytrax. The Barajas Airport in Madrid won first prize and Athens Airport won third prize in the same category.
CEO Şener exclaimed, “The fact that the Istanbul Atatürk Airport has been elected “Second Best Airport” of Southern Europe is a source of great pride for us. The awards we receive prove that we are doing things right.” Recalling the agreement reached regarding the expansion of the Istanbul Atatürk Airport in the last quarter of 2008, Mister Şener also stated that the expansion to be carried out will facilitate transfers and Atatürk will thereby consolidate its claim to being one of the most important transfer hubs in Turkey and the region. Adding that they wish to enhance the comfort and satisfaction of passengers to the highest possible level, Şener contined by saying they aim to bring many new awards to Turkey with new projects.
