BEWARE OF POLLEN ALLERGY

Explaining that pollen allergy stems from an allergic reaction to various proteins in certain types of pollen, Prof. Dr. Adnan Görgülü, Head of the Department of Dermatology in the Faculty of Medicine at Trakya University, also points out that pollen allergy starts out as hay fever (pollinosis) but goes on to affect all organs over time.

Pollen allergy is mostly observed in people in the age range of 5 to 40 and there appears to be an increasing number of people affected by this allergic condition. The allergy may surface in genetically-inclined people due to certain environmental factors. The condition is characterized by sneezing, nasal discharge, symptoms resemble cold and labored breathing as well as watery, itchy and swollen eyes. The patient experiences lethargy and malaise; there may also be an impairment in focus and learning abilities. This condition often negatively affects the business and school lives of many people.

DON’T GO INTO THE HOUSE WITH SHOES ON, TAKE A SHOWER ON WINDY DAYS

The first and most important step for allergy sufferers is to avoid contact with allergens. Shoes should not be allowed inside the house and all windows should be kept closed. Upon entering the house, hands and face should be washed; clothes should be removed immediately and washed. On windy days, it is best to take a shower immediately after coming home. Clothes should be dried inside rather than outside as much as possible. Those with pollen allergies should refrain from going on a picnic and those who must spend time outside should wear a mask. Air purification equipment with filters may be beneficial. Bed sheets and pillowcases should be changed regularly. Carpets and rugs should be vacuumed at least twice a week.

MEDICATION SHOULD BE USED THROUGHOUT THE SEASON

Your doctor will help you in choosing the most beneficial medication. The medication should be used regularly throughout the season. Treatment should continue during periods when allergy symptoms fade due to a decrease in pollen concentrations.
