SUCCESS AND HUMAN FACTOR



Corporations which cannot develop clear, comprehensive strategies are bound to have short lives. Yet, even the best strategies are meaningless without individuals who can implement them.

“The man who has the largest capacity for work and thought is the man who is bound to succeed.” - Henry Ford

The main objective of all companies is to make a profit and for this profitability to be sustainable no matter what size they are. Although tangible capital is highly significant for a company to be established and become operational, another type of capital which is as important is "human." Strategies are needed for long-term success. They may sometimes be developed to outclass rivals in a cutthroat competition or simply to improve operations.

A good strategy initially requires clear, plain, consistent and long-term plans, as well as analyzing the competitive environment and identifying areas of strength which will create an advantage against rivals. However, all of the above depends on effective implementation of the strategy designed. (Robert M Grant-Contemporary Strategy Analysis). Therefore, the human is the primary factor for success. The greatest weapon that the Vietnamese communists had when they defeated the American and French military forces and their incomparable financial and technological resources was a long-term strategy based on belief and motivation. In other words; the human factor won the war for them.

Although companies are organizations established to make profits, they are also social communities –like families- consisting of individuals. Success depends on how accurately, effectively and closely these individuals get together. Individuals need to join forces around a common goal to achieve success. Powerful leaders must understand the strengths of individuals within organizations in order to obtain maximum efficiency from them. Positive aspects must be determined and encouraged; negatives should be overcome through training. Leadership techniques have naturally changed in today's world. As complicated problems are not possible to be solved by a single person, it has become necessary to take advantage of every existing source of experience and intellectual capital. Therefore, leaders who have a vision, encourage participation, analyze human behavior and can motivate their human resources will make their mark in this century. Unhappy employees who become unmotivated and are not allowed the opportunity to make a contribution which utilizes their knowledge and experience will often be nothing more than a financial burden. The importance of qualified, highly skilled human resources will continue to increase in the 21st century. Companies who hope to be successful in this new age of global competition will need to manage human resources and related risks wisely and effectively.
