Sumru Ağıryürüyen, who until now has accompanied her singing solely with her mandolin in a variety of ethnic and folk music performances, has now released a solo album, Issız (Solitary), on which she is accompanied by a number of great musical artists.
Sumru Ağıryürüyen, one of the founders of Mozaik, a very popular band of the 1980s, has continued her musical journey playing with bands such as Ezginin Günlüğü, Bulutsuzluk Özlemi, Yeni Türkü and Grup Yorum. She has now released her first solo album, Issız.
IN MEMORY OF TANJU DURU
In the touching, peaceful atmosphere of Issız, a variety of Ağıryürüyen’s musical influences, blend with performances and improvisations of guest artists, as well as in the song Aladağlar, inspired by Tanju Duru, who passed away in October 2008. Issız, arranged by Tanju Duru, contains songs composed and written by Sumru Ağıryürüyen (Gecesefası, Issız, Öyle Açtım ki, Terk Edilmiş Kent and Toprak), as well as lyrics by Murathan Mungan (Güz Defteri), Meltem Ahıska (Sappho ile Konuşma) and Mehmet Güreli (Beyaz Gece), compositions by Tanju Duru, Ayşe Tütüncü, Serdar Ateşer, Özgür Salıcı and Bülent Somay. Ağıryürüyen’s eight-song album begins with Beyaz Gece, a song with a serene rhythm which transports the listener to another dimension.
IDEAL FOR ETHNIC MUSIC LOVERS
Ağıryürüyen, who has been working on a variety of projects with Göksel Baktagir, Yurdal Tokcan and Istanbul Sazendeleri (as well as bands like the Yinon Muallem Ensemble and Klez-Mez) is also a guest soloist with the Tekfen Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also released two albums, Ayde Mori and Balkan Yolculuğu, in conjunction with Muammer Ketencioğlu. She was also part of the team that created the score for the film Sonbahar (Autumn), released this year. Fans of ethnic and Balkan music should not miss this album.
An icon of French pop music will be in Istanbul
The legendary French singer Sylvie Vartan will come to Istanbul with a 30-strong band as part of a gala night organized in honor of Erkan Özerman’s 50 year career. Vartan will perform with her orchestra on 26 October at the TIM Türker İnanoğlu Maslak Show Center. Vartan, who has been singing since she was 16, first performed in Olympia with the Beatles and still, after forty years in the business, remains hugely popular. The French singer Johnny Hallyday, whom she married when she was 17, was also a much-loved singer in Turkey. Vartan later married Tony Scotti, an American of Italian origin, and settled in Los Angeles. She held three concerts in a row in the “Stade de France” reaching a total audience of 260,000. Those who miss French chansons should get their tickets immediately.
