What is Sustainable Development?
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) describes the concept of sustainable development as “an integral approach that aims to realize a harmonious plan with economic, environmental and social dimensions and that establishes a balance between the requirements of the business world and of human life and the sustainability of natural resources.” The fundamental subjects that the concept of sustainable development focuses on include the prevention and amelioration of the overuse of natural resources in the world, improvement in the quality of life and working towards the development of the economy.
The efficient use of energy
Projects undertaken in the field of Sustainable Development include the Cogeneration and Trigeneration projects completed in Ankara and Istanbul, as well as aiming for the more efficient use of energy sources. Besides these, preparations are underway for a similar project in the Enfidha International Airport that TAV is constructing in Tunisia. At this point let us say that in the next issues of TAV NewsPORT we intend to deal in more detail with Sustainable Development projects aiming at the use of energy.
The efficient use of natural resources
TAV Construction, a company affiliated with the TAV Group, plans and implements massive infrastructure construction projects such as airports and skyscrapers in a way that achieves an maximal use of natural resources. For example, in buildings that make optimum use of sun light, the use of electricity for illumination is kept to a minimum. Bathrooms contain faucets and flush tanks with sensors for water savings and an illumination system with sensors where necessary. Moreover, projects are also implemented for benefitting from rain water and for putting waste water to good use.

Members who earnestly adopt the Sustainable Development approach and aim for its wider application in Turkey have combined their efforts in this field, joining in the formation of the Business Council for Sustainable Development. The aim of the Council is the better understanding, adoption and implementation of the main elements and principles of Sustainable Development in Turkey. Its further aims include research, publications, training activities and organizations with the aim of raising awareness concerning Sustainable Development.
