EDOTOR’S CHOICE LOST-ALL SEASONS

Don’t say “what on earth, why now?” If you still haven’t seen this series--though you work in the aviation sector--go and get all the seasons of the LOST DVDs and watch them! If it’s the first time you are watching them, let me tell you that I‘m sorely jealous of you! Those of us who got involved in LOST from early on cannot even dream of the pleasure from watching all those seasons back to back. We envy you.

The real-life characters the scriptwriters of LOST drew inspiration from:

The philosophers of “OCEANIC FLIGHT815”!

Some characters in LOST are namesakes of real-life philosophers or scientists! It’s clear that the scriptwriters of LOST have not done so simply to prove how smart they are. What lies behind this is a show of respect, a way of sending them a greeting. But we need to acknowledge that this approach does bring a mysterious aspect to the characters and to give our respects to the scriptwriter… Below are some of the LOST characters who have received their share of the scriptwriter’s shrewd and cheeky approach…

JOHN LOCKE
Although his having said “I was wrong,” in response to the explosion of Hatch, and the look of desperation in his eyes dispelled his charisma a bit, he has always been held in high esteem because of his cool dialogues with Jack. Although he never tires of emphasizing how ordinary he is, he cannot convince anyone about this; he is very attached to the island and whatever the power on the island is, he respects it and firmly believes in it. Or maybe “believed” in it… We have to say that he has surprised us and dragged us into a new mystery in the season finale. His namesake, John Locke Somerset, on the other hand, was born in 1632. One of the most important thinkers of the 18th century, he was the first to spread freedom of thought to a great degree and the real founder of the Age of Enlightenment in Europe. In all his works he stated that it was necessary to eradicate all types of traditions and authority and that only reason should guide man’s life. The English, American and French revolutions were all based on his writings. Like Jean Jacques Rousseau and Thomas Hobbes, he advocated the doctrine of natural law. Once again somebody who is named very meaningfully and a portrait that very much suits our Locke, right?

ANTHONY COOPER

The man who makes Locke’s life miserable and who has dedicated himself to conning women. If we look at the wealth of his home, when he has his flashbacks, he seems to have earned quite a bit. Let us remember what he said to Locke: “You needed a father and I needed a kidney… Get over this.”

His namesake, Anthony Ashley Cooper, First Earl of Shaftsbury, born in 1621, was an English politician and philosopher. He wrote books on politics and on the French Revolution.

DESMOND DAVID HUME

Desmond David Hume, our favorite character, has a Scottish accent and has won our hearts when he said “See you in another life, brother!” But then he could not let Charlie die, so he saved him from Azrael every single time. His namesake, David Hume, born in 1711, was Scottish too, but he was a philosopher, economist and historian. He applied Newton’s experimental method to the human mind and he stands out with his approach that proposes to form and develop a new human science. He is the most important representative of English empiricism and scepticism. But he is also known for advocating conservatism and traditionalism in politics. He refers to Kant as “the one who woke him from his dogmatic slumber.” He influenced also his close friend Adam Smith.

MIKHAIL BAKUNIN

If we consider that Benjamin said, “Be always loyal,” we can understand that he is a real man of responsibility. There are so many theories about him… There are even those who say that he fought in Afghanistan and that he joined Dharma because of a press ad where it said, “Would you like to save the world?” But what about his namesake? Mikhail Aleksandroviç Bakunin (1814-1876) was a famous Russian anarchist and a representative of the first generation of anarchist philosophers. Those who watch the series will understand how meaningfully the character was named.

DANIEL FARADAY

This LOST character, whose first name refers to the Prophet Daniel who rescued the Israelites from Babylon and whose surname refers to Michael Faraday, the English scientist who discovered the tie between magnetism and electricity, quickly became a favorite in the series. He is a physician who is obsessed with time travel, or rather who is obsessed in between different times. The way he looked at the island in the finale of the fifth season broke our hearts and some of us even cried for him. His namesake Faraday on the other hand is a scientist who has deeply affected our lives and has added an element of fun to chemistry classes with the electrolysis laws he discovered. He demonstrated in his experiments that a certain amount of electricity passing through a substance resulted in a certain amount of disintegration within the elements forming that substance. We owe him also terms such as “electrode,” “anode,” “cathode,” "electrolyte” and “ion.”
