The TAV Group, which comprises TAV Airports and TAV Construction, aims to support sports within the corporation, organizing in-house tournaments through the establishment of basketball, football, bowling, volleyball and sailing teams.
There are plans for the amateur sports matches that have been taking place since 2000 to acquire a corporate structure as part of the TAV Sports Club. The sports activities that contribute greatly to the physical and mental health of employees will therefore be organized in a more structured way. An increase in internal communications and the development of team spirit are anticipated positive effects of these activities. Additionally, the TAV Group’s for success will be enhanced not only in the sector but also in sports activities.
BHS Manager Emin Çolpan, one of the most active members of the TAV Sports Club to be created by the TAV Airports Corporate Communications Coordination Department, states that in a 4,000 strong corporation there is a great need for sports and social activities. With this aim, teams have been established in many sports branches, starting with bowling, and seasonal tournaments are being organized.
The teams--that up to now have been participating in bowling, football, volleyball and basketball competitions--have drawn attention with the success they have achieved. The TAV Group participates in these competitions at times as a “national team,” at times through individual teams formed within the corporationcorporation (such as ATÜ, BTA, TAV Security, etc). There are also plans to establish sailing and table tennis teams in the near future.
As bowling tournaments are easily organized, they are among the activities that take place most frequently. The TAV Group is participating in these tournaments by forming a team consisting of the best players of each unit. In the bowling tournament organized among business companies in 2002-2003, the TAV Team came in first. In April of this year the team came in fourth and was elected the “Most Gallant Team.” Maintenance and Repairs Shift Chief Erdal Uçar, who is among the most athletic of TAV employees, states that the company provides them with support in this field saying, “In 2003, six of us were sent to a three month-long bowling course, where we learned rolling techniques; after which we achieved greater success in tournaments.”
Football is one of the most appealing sports for TAV employees. Teams from all the organizations working in the Istanbul Atatürk Airport (Turkish Airlines, the Gendarmerie, ATÜ, BTA, etc) participate in these football tournaments, which are very competitive as well as great fun.
“In October we are going to found the “TAV Sports Club,” through which we intend to enhance the social and business lives of TAV employees. Initially we are going to establish TAV teams and organize tournaments in football, basketball, volleyball and bowling.”
RAMAZAN USTA
TAV Sports Club President
The volleyball tournament, which has now become a fixture, was organized for the fifth time this year. TAV was represented by two teams, “TAV Land” and “TAV Air” at the volleyball tournament, where all organizations working at the Istanbul Atatürk Airport took part.
In the Business League, organized among business companies, the TAV basketball team achieved quite a success by making it to the quarter finals.
TAV Sports Club Deputy President Emin Çolpan has the following to say about the predisposition of TAV employees to sports: “One of the characteristics that we pay attention to when recruiting TAV employees is that they should be interested in sports at least as a hobby. Therefore, if you put up a notice announcing that “a basketball tournament will be organized,” there are always at least some people who have played that sport. When I was young, I too played volleyball and basketball, although I did not pursue these sports professionally. This is a good excuse not to distance myself too much from these sports.”
Maintenance and Repairs Team Chief Erol Uçar states that the common features of TAV sportsmen are that they are gallant and fun, saying, “We bring good humor to the tournaments we participate in because we are full of positive energy. And our colleagues support us till the very end. If we take the team to the next stages, than messaging begins and the number of participants increases.”
Maintenance and Repairs Shift Chief Nail Polat says: “If the corporation has stood by us and has enabled us to participate in these sports activities and we have represented the corporation successfully, then I think that a positive energy will result from this. It is also very important that our sports needs are met by the corporation. Sports activities create an opportunity for our families to participate as spectators, for us to get together with our colleagues in a different environment and for us to blow off steam.”
According to Emin Çolpan, team membership reflects positively also on working life. When friendship is formed and the feeling of fighting for the same objective develops, team spirit grows and communication is enhanced among departments. In other words, sports are reflected onto work in the form of productivity.
Once the TAV Sports Club comes into being, sports activities will be organized in a more disciplined and efficient way and TAV will become the star of tournaments among business companies.
