RECOMMENDED BY THE EDITOR
Before you visit the exhibition, we recommend that you read the novelentitled Amat, by İhsan Oktay Anar, which describes the story of an Ottoman galleon that departed from Istanbul.
“The Logbook of the Ottoman Navy: Ships, Legends, Sailors,” the exhibition that has opened in the Pera Museum, throws light on a history that extends from the 16th century Ottoman galley to the Yavuz battlecruiser and the transition from a traditional understanding of seafaring to modern seafaring methods.
The imprint of the ships in Ottoman seafaring history, the battles they were engaged in and the heroes who became legendary in these battles are on display at the Pera Museum and Istanbul Research Institute until 4 October. Curated by Ekrem Işın, the exhibition brings to light galiots, galleons, battlecruisers–the mythological gods of modern times–seamen’s legends transmitted from generation to generation and heroes, each of which constituted a different story. They witnessed journeys and experiences of a lifetime into the unknown which have left the Ottoman imprint on the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
Exhibitions of the Navy Commanders who ruled the Ottoman Navy, Ministers of the Navy during the Tanzimat period and naval maps are on display in the Istanbul Research Institute exhibition halls, constituting the most impressive documents of this historical period.,
