TAV Airports has presented its 2008 Annual Report, prepared as digital media, to the accompaniment of Kerem Görsev’s music
The musical journey of financial figures
It has become a tradition for TAV Airports to reflect the innovative spirit in its makeup onto its activity reports. Following the award winning success of the 2007 Activity Report, presented together with Buket Uzuner’s novel, Istanbullular, this time financial figures have been presented with music. For the 2008 Activity Report, prepared in digital media around the concept of “Meetings,” Kerem Görsev has composed seven pieces, dedicated to the terminals operated by TAV Airports within Turkey and in other countries and cities.
TAV Airports Holding has carried the creative thinking behind the 2007 Annual Report into the 2008 Annual Report. Last year Buket Uzuner’s novel, Istanbullular, was quoted and numbers were blended with literature. TAV Airports’ 2007 Annual Report won the Silver Award in the Traditional Creativity Awards Competition held in the USA and the “Best Design in Annual Reports” in the “Graphic Products Competition” organized by the Turkish Society of Graphic Design and was reprinted due to the great interest it elicited
THE 2008 ANNUAL REPORT RECEIVES ITS FIRST AWARD FROM LACP
FOUR MAJOR INTERNATIONAL AWARDS: TAV Airports Holding’s 2008 Annual Report had awards conferred on it in four different branches of the eight Annual Reports Vision Awards of the League of American Communication Professionals, leaving behind the annual reports of world giants
Because of its success in developing its annual report, a Platinum Award has been conferred upon TAV Airports Holding in the category of “Communicators’ Choice in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and a Gold Award in the worldwide category of “Communicators’ Choice.” Furthermore, TAV has also been received a Silver Award for perfection in developing an annual report for the previous year. The report was also granted an award for being included among the top 100 Annual Reports chosen from among 3,500 projects for the year 2008. It was quoted that the TAV Airports 2008 Annual Report was granted these awards because of its innovative, inquisitive and out-of-the-ordinary approach, and of its role in strengthening the fundamental messages of the concept of communications.
“I believe that TAV Airports’ 2008 Annual Report is a very creative work. Last year too, I was impressed when I saw the integration of the report with Buket Uzuner’s Istanbullular novel. TAV has maintained the same approach this year as well. It is wonderful that an annual report should make a contribution to the field of art; this is an out-of-the-ordinary, inspiring and praiseworthy work.”

TEAM WORK AND THE SUCCESS OF CREATIVE THINKING
The 2008 Annual Report was created as a result of collaboration between the Department of Investor Relations of TAV Airports Holding, the Corporate Investors’ Coordination and Finar Corporate Agency, which operates in the field of market research. Thus, the financial reports of TAV were accentuated with musical notes from the jazz virtuoso Kerem Görsev.
In the 2008 Annual Report--prepared in great detail in digital media--one can click on the relevant heading and examine the company’s financial figures while experiencing the joy of listening to music composed by famous renowned jazz composer Görsev. For example, when the Ankara Esenboğa Airport is clicked, one hears the piece composed for Ankara.
The digital content approach has achieved savings in paper consumption by reducing the dimensions of the book containing the report summary to a CD box and by requiring a smaller number of pages, thereby also constituting an example of the environmental awareness of TAV Airports.
“TAV has surpassed even itself this year, preparing an annual report that is even more striking than last year’s. (…) Companies that are tired of producing boring annual reports should talk to TAV and ask for their “know how…” Believe me, it’s worth it…”

A POINT OF VIEW BASED ON PEOPLE
As was the case last year, the 2008 Annual Report goes beyond conventional annual report formats and a people-centered approach has been maintained in its preparation. The jazz musician Kerem Görsev has composed music for each airport operated by TAV Airports. The stories of the cities and countries where the terminals are located are reflected in these compositions. TAV Airports Holding, which serves 41 million passengers on three different continents, thus brought together Görsev’s music with the airports, which constitute entryways into cities. The resulting recordings were made into a CD and placed into the specially designed booklet, together with the digital content of the Annual Report. Thus, while the financial figures of the airports that TAV Airports operates in various cities of Turkey and in various countries abroad are examined, jazz music inspired by that city or country reminds one again of the importance of people to TAV Airports.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
TAV Airports Holding Investor Relations Manager Nursel İlgen offers that they are well aware that close to 42% of TAV Airports Holding shares are traded on the Istanbul Stock Exchange. With this sense of responsibility, they aim to inform investors and participants of the finance market of the activities of the company and of its financial situation. Emphasizing that every year they prepare the annual report with great care and attention, İlgen says that TAV Airports Holding serves 41 million passengers on three continents; they are firmly making their way from a local to a global company, “without forgetting that they serve people with the strength they derive from people.”
TAV Airports Holding Corporate Communications Coordinator Bengi Vargül, on the other hand, points out that “thinking outside the box, daring to bring into being this difference” lies at the basis of the corporate culture of TAV. “On the basis of the support we, as TAV Airports, provide to arts and culture, we created a project never thought of before in the field of literature and released our 2007 Annual Report together with Buket Uzuner. In the 2008 Annual Report, on the other hand, we have brought airports, meeting places of life, together with jazz, the music of cities and of city people. Jazz is known as the music of city life and it reflects the ethnic fabric of cities. With the accompaniment of Kerem Görsev’s music, we wished that the rhythm and color of the work we do be reflected in the 2008 Annual Report.”
THE PRESENTATION RECEPTION FOR THE 2008 ANNUAL REPORT
The 2008 Annual Report was presented to participants at a cocktail reception held on 25 May 2009, at the Istanbul Atatürk Airport. A concert by Kerem Görsev, who performed the music he composed for the airports operated by TAV, was presented as a surprise during the reception. TAV CEO Sani Şener, who made a short speech before the concert, assured that TAV Airports Holding is continuing non-stop with its investments, that the number of aircrafts active in the world--currently numbering 19,000--will reach 36,000 in 2025, and that the 93 airports that receive 64% of commercial flights will not be able to meet demand.
Stating that investments in airports should increase, Şener emphasized that TAV has a major growth strategy in this market and that they are carrying out airport operations very efficiently in North Africa, the Middle East, the Caucasus and Eastern Europe; that is to say, within the borders of the former Ottoman Empire. Highlighting that TAV Construction is also building airports in important countries of the world such as Oman, Qatar and Tunisia, Şener said, “We are very happy to work together, with great synergy, in this sector.” Şener then went on to thank the Department of Investor Relations and the Corporate Communications Coordination Department, which played a major role in the preparation of the Annual Report, and Kerem Görsev, for the beautiful music he composed. Following his speech, guests took a musical journey to Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Alanya, Georgia, Tunisia and Macedonia, to the accompaniment of Kerem Görsev and his band.
“The Annual Report is very successful from the point of view of its size, paper quality, printing and content. It is easy to carry, to keep and to understand. The presentation, accompanied by Kerem Görsev’s music, has been very carefully thought out. I think it is a very successful idea that such a large organization should express its claim to globalism by providing support for arts and culture. I enjoyed the concert and having acquired the report as well as the CD gave me a positive impression. As a business woman, an airport user who is included in TAV’s target group and a global project manager, I would like to congratulate TAV and all those who contributed to this project.”

“For the past ten years I have been using the television to communicate my ideas about economy and finances. Our duty is to make the news more appealing and numbers more comprehensible. TAV Airports has managed to add appeal to its 2008 annual report by utilizing a completely different narrative and by blending financial figures with music. With its annual report, for which a universal method of narrative was chosen, TAV sets the standard a little higher, as always.”

The third dimension in annual reports
Baki Kara, Chairman of the Finar Corporate Agency, tells of the journey undertaken with TAV to bring a different dimension of creativity to the annual report.
Baki Kara
Finar Corporate Agency, Chairman
Annual reports are the most boring documents in the world. No one wishes to read an annual report from beginning to end. It is considered to be a success if the target group even opens the report and glances through it. According to a poll conducted abroad, high level managers dedicate 20 seconds to reading an annual report. That is why it is important to present figures not only correctly but also creatively; because you are conveying not only figures but also the messages of the organization to the target group. Up to the courageous approach of TAV Airports, we used to limit creativity to the design and dimensions of the report booklet. TAV has brought a new dimension and said, “This dimension is called art.” In this kind of work, the difference lies in the organization rather than in the agency. TAV Airports brought an innovation to this field that attracted the attention of all other organizations and made them say, “We want to take on an approach like this as well.” From our point of view, TAV Airports is the organization with the most innovative instincts.
Corporate Communications Expert Sıla Usta follows the intensive traffic within the preparation process of annual reports closely and leads them on behalf of her unit. Every phase of the report needs to be read and approved of by all relevant units. Amendments need to be sent to the agency and then the text needs to be submitted once again for approval. Sıla Usta works one-on-one with the Department of Investor Relations on the content and on the approval process.
Sıla Usta described the preparation of the 2008 Annual Report as follows: “Once the presentation concept for this year’s Annual Report was established, the headings of the report and the content were compiled from the various relevant departments and the report was prepared under the supervision of the Department of Investor Relations. The final versions of the texts were achieved as a result of comments by Directors, General Managers and the Department of Investors’ Relations.
Once the text underwent amendments a few times during the approval process, a model of the Annual Report was prepared and, following final checks on the design and text, the printing process began. The Annual Report, on which we began working in January 2008, was presented publicly on 25 May 2009, with a concert by Kerem Görsev.”
Jazz virtuoso Kerem Görsev:
“We were inspired by the airports operated by TAV and their cities.”
The jazz artist Kerem Görsev shared with TAV the story behind the music he composed for the TAV Airports Holding 2008 Annual Report.
What did you think when you were asked to compose music for an annual report? KEREM GÖRSEV: Jazz is the music of surprises; it enjoys the unexpected. The TAV project was an unexpected surprise and it was beautiful because of its integration with music. For me, jazz is a mechanism for fantasizing. Airports too, in a sense, are like doors through which people pass towards their dreams, through which they hope to achieve their aspirations. I think that it was this connection that persuaded me to do this project and that excited me. When Baki Kara, Chairman of Finar Corporate Agency, called me and said that they wanted me to compose music for seven airports operated by TAV Airports, I thought that it was a very creative project. This is also a project that only courageous people can bring to life.
Moreover, we must not forget that this activity report is actually a digital report. People will be able to listen to this in 10 years’ time too, by attaching it to their PCs, or most probably to any electronic or web-based device. We are talking about a work that will not be thrown away and that can be preserved as a collection piece.
How would you define your own “sound?”
K.G: I tell stories of what I experience with acoustic instruments, using the mainstream sound of the 1950s and 60s and elements of American harmony and rhythm. We could call it an “acoustic touch of the Mediterranean.”
How did the music you composed for TAV Airports come into being?
K.G:Every piece of music has its own story. For example, if you listen to “Izmir,” you will feel the courage and the wide horizons of Izmir. “Alanya” will remind us of our Mediterranean aspect and “Istanbul” will reflect chaos, fusion and history. The music for Tunisia will convey vivacity, the intensity of the Mediterranean people and the spirit of Africa. In every piece you listen to, you will find traces of that city and of the people of that country. I have poured my sentiments regarding those cities and countries into musical notes. Following the composition process, my friends at the Kerem Görsev Quintet and I rehearsed and then we made the studio recording.
What kind of a sentimental bond did you establish with these seven locations for which you composed music?
K.G: : Istanbul is the city I am in love with and the city where I live. Ankara is where I performed my military service in the years 1981-82. Izmir is the city I love the most after Istanbul. I find the enthusiasm of the Mediterranean people very inspiring and Alanya is therefore very meaningful for me. The airports and the cities are the heroes of this album. In order to establish a sentimental bond, it is necessary to know about those cities’ fabrics and histories. For example, “Ankara” is composed in a jazz-waltz style, in reference to Atatürk having danced the waltz in Ankara. “Istanbul,” on the other hand, reminds one of fusion, chaos, history and migrations. I was inspired by history when I composed the pieces for Georgia, Macedonia and Tunisia.
